What is yoni steaming?

1 Apr, 2018

Yoni steaming is a traditional way to care for your womb space. There are historical records of vaginal steaming all over the world. Even in the UK, it was called fumigation!

If you are experiencing painful, crampy periods, vaginal dryness or have a diagnosed condition like PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, cold uterus, or thrush then I suggest you give this a go.

What is Yoni steaming?

Yoni steaming also known as hip baths, vsteams, vaginal steaming, bajos and many other terms are a traditional way of supporting and healing the reproductive system.

Women have used herbs for thousands of years to cleanse and rejuvenate their reproductive organs, you know before there was big pharma they were always herbs!

Commonly used after the birth of a child as postnatal recovery, smoking and steaming is used to cleanse and restore women to their pre-pregnancy state.

Its becoming more common to find yoni steam bars in major cities around the western hemisphere!

So what is it?

Preparing herbs for vaginal steam

Steaming the pelvic area, just as you would steam your face, it’s pretty simple too!

A selection of herbs are brewed in boiling water, the woman then squats over this allowing the steam to reach her pelvic area.

Common herbs would be lavender which offers relaxation and cleansing properties. Nettle is a very popular yoni herb supporting the yoni with nourishment, rose is popular too, smells beautiful and aids with toning and soothing. I use rose in both my Disinfecting and Cleansing blends.

Some cultures use smoke, which I would refer to as smoking. This is more commonly used for hardened blends of barks and resins rather than herbs similar to what you use in teas. Depending on location around the world,b steam blends herbs can vary.

What does Yoni steaming do

The tissues in the vaginal and anal area can both benefit from steaming.

The steam from the herbal water opens the pores allowing the therapeutic benefits of the selected herbs to seep into the skin.

Circulating into the bloodstream and helping to soothe, repair, enhance the function of the reproductive organs.

I use the term yoni steaming because yoni refers to the vagina, vulva, clitoris, perineal and anus a broader area than one might imagine with vaginal steaming.

Steam does reach the back passage area, so can also help shrink hemorrhoids (piles) and also soothe and support healing stitches and sore perineal area after child birth.

Yoni steaming has shown to be helpful in the following situations:

  • Endometriosis
  • Cyst
  • Fibroids
  • Blocked fallopian tubes
  • Uterus cleansing
  • UTI relief
  • Water retention
  • Prolapse
  • Vaginal tightening
  • Freshen vagina
  • After birth
  • After Miscarriages
  • Monthly maintenance after periods
  • Piles
  • Bacterial infections
  • STDs
  • Episiotomy

What herbs to use

Vaginal steaming with lavender

You can use various herbs and they have different benefits, including soothing, relaxing, detoxing, antibacterial, antispasmodic (cramping) including herbs from the Sunnah!

It is important not to use essential oils in the steam as these are quite potent and too strong for yoni steaming.

The herbal blends are formulated to add balance to your cycle, so rather than look at the issues, by analysing the cycle the correct blend can be found. There are blends for short cycles, long cycles, unpleasant discharge, and nourishing blends and sisters will typically fall into one or two of these blends.

How often should you do it?

Well, that all depends on you. If you are feeling like you need some pampering and your periods are a nightmare; then what are you waiting for?

If you are postpartum, then as soon as you can steam. The effects of vaginal steaming in your postnatal period will aid your recovery to a pre-pregnancy state. – You will be amazed! Please note if you had a caesarean section, you need to wait 6 weeks before steaming.

As great as yoni steaming is; there is no substitute for eating well and taking good care of yourself. Use vsteams as part of your regular self-care routine. You owe yourself some all about you time.

When yoni steaming, make sure you follow the instructions and always check the temperature before sitting down. This is not medical advice. Listen to your body and consult with a Yoni Steam Consultant if you have any queries or need personalised guidance.
