Why You Keep Getting Thrush

4 May, 2024

Let’s look at reasons why you keep getting thrush and what you can do about it.

Thrush is a common yeast infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans, a fungus naturally present in the body. Though it affects men, women, and even babies, recurrent vaginal thrush can be especially frustrating for women. It often seems to come out of nowhere, sometimes before or after your period, leaving many wondering what the triggers are and how to prevent it.

In this post, I’m going to highlight contributing factors, and natural remedies, including yoni steaming, dietary changes, and lifestyle adjustments, that can help manage and prevent thrush from returning.

Why Do You Keep Getting Thrush?

First off, let’s start by highlighting some reasons that thrush thrives, so you can understand why you keep getting thrush. Candida, although you may only notice it in your vaginal area, is also present throughout the digestive tract, and it’s normal for us to have candida albicans within our bodies, they are part of us. The problem occurs when we have too much of it and this interferes with our natural balance.

Do I need to be concerned about thrush?

Yes. While many of us are aware of vaginal candida aka thrush, not many are aware of systematic candida. This is when candida overgrowth invades all systems of your body. This not only shows up as vaginal discharge and discomfort but is also associated with leaky gut, weak digestion, fertility, fatigue, aches and pains along with brain fog and cognitive impairment! With gut health playing an important role in our fertility it is important for us to be aware of what could be putting barrier up for us.

Signs of systematic candida include, headaches, digestive issues, allergies, fatigue, asthma like symptoms, skin rashes and more, I will be writing about this topic at a later date so make sure you follow to stay in the loop.

What causes Candida albicans to overgrow?

There are a number of factors why candida overgrows and causes recurring thrush.

Here are some common reasons:

  • High Sugar Intake: Candida thrives on sugar. A diet high in sugar or processed foods can feed the candida in your system, causing it to multiply.
  • Unmanaged Stress: Stress weakens the immune system, making it harder for your body to regulate the balance of yeast and bacteria.
  • Tight or Synthetic Underwear: Tight clothing and synthetic fabrics trap moisture, creating an ideal environment for yeast to grow.
  • Hormonal Fluctuations: Thrush often flares up around your menstrual cycle due to changes in hormone levels, which can impact vaginal pH balance.

Natural Remedies for Thrush

You may have tried many creams and suppositories for thrush, only to find it comes back a few weeks later. That is related to the root causes (see above) not being addressed. And we are here looking for solutions not band-aids.

If you’ve been struggling with recurring thrush, lifestyle changes and natural remedies can offer long-term relief. By addressing the root causes along with these natural remedies you can say bye-bye once and for all.

1. Yoni Steaming

2. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a well-known antifungal that can be applied topically. Diluting a few drops in coconut oil before applying it to the affected area can help kill excess yeast. However, be mindful of its potency, and always perform a patch test to avoid irritation, dont forget to dilute it before using it on your skin. And it is not for douching, dont put anything inside.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar helps restore the natural pH balance in the vagina and has antifungal properties. Mix 1 part vinegar with 2 parts water and apply with a cotton ball. Leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse. You could also use this as a rinse after using the toilet. Repeat daily until symptoms improve. Dry thoroughly and then apply coconut oil.

4. Garlic Fights Candida

Garlic is a natural antifungal and antibacterial. Adding it to your diet or taking it as a supplement can help combat candida overgrowth from within. It’s an easy addition to your meals that can boost your overall health. The benefits come from the allicin compound found in the garlic. Quick Tip: Crush garlic and let it sit for a few minutes before adding to food to boost its antifungal properties.

5. Coconut Oil for Thrush

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, a potent antifungal agent that kills Candida albicans. It can be used topically to soothe and treat thrush or taken internally as part of a candida-fighting diet, you could mix this with tea tree oil and apply it on irritated areas on the labia. Coconut is a cooling oil, so it helps give relief to the burning itch that can come with thrush.

6. Oregano Oil for Candida

Oregano oil is another powerful antifungal. The active compound, carvacrol, has strong antifungal and antimicrobial properties. You can use oregano oil internally or topically, but ensure it is properly diluted to avoid irritation. It is very potent and doesn’t taste nice but it is very effective.

Lifestyle Changes that Can Help You Stop Getting Thrush

In addition to the remedies above, certain lifestyle adjustments can make a big difference in preventing thrush from returning:

  • Wear breathable cotton underwear: Allow airflow to the vaginal area, keeping it dry and less hospitable to yeast growth.
  • Avoid tight clothing: Opt for looser clothing, especially during workouts, to avoid moisture buildup.
  • Maintain good hygiene: Avoid chemical soaps, scented products, or anything that might upset the vaginal pH balance
  • Go Natural: Opt for natural products where possible, cotton sanitary wear, and avoid tampons, natural soaps and body products, to help your body stay balanced.
  • Improve your diet: Cut down on sugar and processed foods, which can feed candida overgrowth. Focus on a balanced diet rich in vegetables, lean proteins, and fermented foods like yoghurt or sauerkraut to promote gut health.
  • Mind your sexual health: Ensure both you and your partner maintain good hygiene and consider using condoms until the issue is resolved.
  • Manage your stress: Stress plays a role in the reason why you keep getting thrush, so find ways to manage it, exercise, journal, and increase your self-care time.

Conclusion

Thrush can be uncomfortable and persistent, but with natural remedies and lifestyle changes, you can effectively manage and prevent it from returning. Being mindful of the triggers—such as sugar intake, stress, and synthetic fabrics, along with tools like yoni steaming and herbal remedies, can make a huge difference in your vaginal health.
